The Snapmaker U1 is our four-toolhead toolchanger. Instead of one nozzle that has to purge and swap filament for every color change (like an AMS), the U1 has four independent toolheads, each loaded with its own filament and kept preheated. When your print needs a different color or material, the printer parks one head and picks up another in about 5 seconds — with almost no purge waste. It's a fast CoreXY machine with a 270mm cubed build volume, auto calibration, a touchscreen, and a chamber camera. Best for multi-color PLA/PETG prints, mixing rigid and flexible (TPU) parts in one print, and anything where you'd otherwise throw away a pile of purge filament.
Overview
How a toolchanger works
Most multi-color printers (like our P1S with its AMS) have one nozzle. Every color change means cutting the filament, pulling it back, feeding the new one, and purging the old color out — which wastes filament and time.

The U1 skips all of that. Its four toolheads sit docked at the back of the printer, each already loaded and heated. The print carriage drives over, locks onto the head it needs, prints, then parks it and grabs the next one.

What that means for you:
* Much less waste — only a small prime tower, no pile of purge "poop."
* Faster multi-color prints — swaps take seconds, not minutes.
* True multi-material — each head can hold a different material (e.g. PLA body with TPU grips, or PETG with a breakaway support material).
* Four colors max — one per toolhead. If you need more than 4, use the P1S or X1C with multiple AMS units.

Toolhead numbering: The heads are numbered 1–4. In the slicer, filament 1 = toolhead 1, filament 2 = toolhead 2, and so on.
Software
⭐ Recommended: Snapmaker Orca
style="background:#f0a500; color:white; font-size:115%;" | 🏆 Use Snapmaker Orca for This Machine
style="padding:10px;" |
Snapmaker Orca is Snapmaker's version of OrcaSlicer, with tuned U1 profiles and full support for the four-toolhead workflow. Free.
* Select "Snapmaker U1" when adding the printer.
* Set up all four filaments in the filament list to match what's loaded in toolheads 1–4.
* Always use the latest stable version.
Snapmaker U1 product & software page →
Also works: Standard OrcaSlicer supports the U1 as well. If you already use OrcaSlicer for other machines, add the U1 profile there.

Where to slice: Snapmaker Orca is installed on the makerspace lab PCs — you're welcome to use those, or install it free on your own laptop.

Tip: The weight estimate you need for your sticky note and filament payment is shown in the slice preview after you click "Slice plate." Use the total — it includes the small prime tower.
Startup / First-Print Workflow
# Complete mandatory training before use, and sign in on the equipment log.
# Turn on the printer using the power switch.
# Check the build plate: it should be clean and seated flat on the magnetic bed.
# Check what's loaded in each toolhead (1–4) on the touchscreen — note the color/material in each.
# Slice your model in Snapmaker Orca with the U1 profile. Set each filament in the list to match the toolhead it's actually loaded in. For a single-color print, assign everything to the toolhead with the filament you want.
# Write your name, contact info, and estimated filament weight on a sticky note and attach it to the printer (see the 3D Printing Area checklist).
# Send the print to the printer using the USB flash drive method below (or over the network, if it's working).
# Let the printer run its automatic calibration — don't skip this. Toolhead alignment matters on a toolchanger; skipping it can misalign colors between heads.
# Watch the first layer (and the first toolhead swap, if multi-color) to confirm good adhesion and clean changes.
# Stay reachable during the print; check in periodically on long jobs (or use the chamber camera, if the network is up).
# Let the bed cool, then remove the flexible plate and flex it to pop your print off. Put the plate back and clean up scraps. Sign out on the log sheet.

💾 Printing from a USB Flash Drive (Standard Method)
style="background:#fff3cd; border: 2px solid #f0a500; padding:10px;" | ⚠️ Always know how to do this. The network connection may not be set up or reliable on any given day — the USB drive works every time.
# After slicing, click the dropdown arrow next to the print/send button (top right) and choose the option to export the sliced file / G-code.
# Save the file (it ends in .gcode) to a USB flash drive.
# Plug the drive into the printer's USB port.
# On the touchscreen, open the file list for the USB drive, select your file, and start the print.
# If the printer offers calibration options, leave them turned on.
Tip: Give your file a recognizable name (e.g. yourname_keychain.gcode) so it's easy to find on the screen.

📡 Printing over the Network (When Available)
If the printer shows up in Snapmaker Orca's Device tab, you can send the job directly from the slicer. If the printer doesn't appear or the send fails, don't troubleshoot the network — just use the USB method above.

🎨 Loading Filament into the Toolheads
* Each toolhead has its own spool and filament path. Load and unload through the touchscreen (filament load menu) — pick the toolhead number, then follow the prompts to heat, feed, and confirm extrusion.
* Set the correct material type for each toolhead on the screen so it heats to the right temperature.
* Don't swap other people's filament mid-print. Only change a toolhead that isn't being used by a running print, and put it back when you're done.
* Don't pull a toolhead off its dock by hand — the printer manages swaps itself. Ask a volunteer if a head looks stuck or misaligned.
Materials
Approved Materials
Material !! Status !! Notes
PLA || ✅ || Best all-around choice; great for 4-color prints
PETG || ✅ || Good durability; use glue stick on the PEI plate to prevent over-adhesion
TPU || ✅ (with care) || Flexible; print slow. Unlike an AMS, TPU can go in any toolhead — great for combining rigid and flexible parts in one print
PVA / Breakaway support || ⚠️ Caution || Works well on a toolchanger (dedicate one head to support), but keep PVA dry — it absorbs moisture fast. Ask a volunteer first.
style="background:#ffe4e4;" | ABS / ASA || style="background:#ffe4e4;" | ❌ Not recommended || style="background:#ffe4e4;" | Partially enclosed with no chamber heater or filtration — warps and releases fumes. Use the P1S, X1C, or H2D.
style="background:#ffe4e4;" | Nylon / PC || style="background:#ffe4e4;" | ❌ Not recommended || style="background:#ffe4e4;" | Beyond this machine's temperature and enclosure limits. Use the H2D.
style="background:#ffe4e4;" | Carbon-fiber / glass-fiber / abrasive filled || style="background:#ffe4e4;" | ❌ Not recommended || style="background:#ffe4e4;" | Stainless nozzles — abrasives wear them out quickly. Use the H2D (hardened steel nozzle).
When in doubt about a material/machine combination, ask a volunteer before printing.
Material Handling & Storage
* Store spools dry, cool, and out of direct sunlight in a resealable bag with desiccant.
* PETG, TPU, and PVA absorb moisture — wet filament causes stringing, popping, and weak prints. Dry it before use if it's been left out.
* Make sure each spool unwinds freely — a tangled spool can stall a toolhead mid-print.
Safety
⚠️ Burns: The nozzles reach 300°C and the bed reaches 100°C. All four toolheads stay hot while preheated, including the ones parked at the back. Don't touch any of them with bare hands. Allow the printer to cool before maintenance.

⚠️ Moving parts: The print head moves extremely fast and travels to the back of the machine to swap tools. Keep hands out of the printer while it's running — pause or stop the print from the touchscreen first.

⚠️ Ventilation: The U1 has no fume filtration. Use adequate ventilation and stick to the approved low-fume materials above. Check the SDS for non-standard materials.

⚠️ Electrical: Use the printer's own power cord with an earthed wall socket. Always unplug before maintenance.
style="background:#fff3cd; border: 2px solid #f0a500;" | ⚠️ Toolhead & Dock Warning
style="background:#fff3cd; border: 2px solid #f0a500; padding:10px;" | Never move, bump, or remove a toolhead from its dock by hand, and keep the docking area at the back of the printer clear. A misplaced or misaligned toolhead can cause a failed swap or a crash. If a swap fails, stop the print and get a volunteer.
General rules:
* Complete mandatory training and sign in before use.
* Never leave the first layer unattended.
* Don't store items inside the printer — objects in the chamber or docking area can block the print head or a toolhead swap.
* Don't change printer settings, firmware, or nozzles yourself — ask a volunteer.
* Report jams, failures, and maintenance issues. Clean the bed and remove scraps when done.
Troubleshooting
Issue !! Likely Cause !! Fix
Poor bed adhesion || Oily/dirty plate || Wash the plate with dish soap and water (don't touch the surface with bare fingers); re-run calibration
Print won't come off || PETG over-adhesion, plate still hot || Let the plate cool fully, then flex it. Use glue stick as a release layer for PETG next time
Colors misaligned between toolheads || Calibration skipped or toolhead offsets out of date || Re-run the automatic calibration from the touchscreen before printing
Wrong colors printed || Filament order in the slicer didn't match toolheads 1–4 || Check what's loaded in each head, fix the filament list, and re-export
Toolhead swap error || Bumped/misaligned toolhead, debris in the dock || Stop the print and get a volunteer — don't reseat toolheads by hand
Stringing / oozing from parked heads || Wet filament, idle temperature too high || Dry the filament; use the default material profiles in Snapmaker Orca
Filament runout error mid-print || Spool empty or tangled || Load new filament into that toolhead and resume from the touchscreen
File doesn't show up on the printer || Exported the project instead of the sliced G-code, or the drive isn't seated || Re-export the sliced .gcode file, re-insert the drive
Error message on display || Various || Note the exact message and report it to a volunteer; check Snapmaker Support
