The Elegoo Orange Storm Giga is GRM's massive-format 3D printer, with an 800 × 800 × 1000 mm build volume — large enough to print full-size parts in a single piece that would otherwise need to be split across smaller machines and assembled. It's an open-frame, flying-gantry Cartesian printer with four independent heated beds and a direct-drive extruder. GRM's unit has been upgraded with the custom Open OrangeStorm operating system, so it requires guidance before use (see the reserved block above).

Overview

The Orange Storm Giga is built for parts that simply won't fit on any other machine at GRM. Its flying-gantry design rides on linear guides across the full 800 × 800 mm span for stability on large prints, and the four-zone heated bed lets you heat only the plates you're actually using to save energy.

A few things that make it different from our everyday machines:

  • It's enormous. Prints can run for many hours or days — plan accordingly and coordinate with volunteers.
  • Four-plate bed. The magnetic PEI plates remove individually for easy part release, but the cross-hair seam where they meet can leave a faint mark on the underside of prints spanning the center.
  • Manual + auto leveling. The auto-level gets you close, but this machine often needs manual plate balancing and Z-offset attention — part of why guidance is required.
  • High power draw. Four heated beds plus a high-flow hotend pull significant power (this is the reason a nominal usage charge is being considered).

Always start from the GRM-tuned profile. Because this unit runs the upgraded Open OrangeStorm OS, confirm current slicer/connection settings with a volunteer before sending a job.

When in doubt about a material, ask a volunteer before printing.

Safety

⚠️ Guidance required — do not operate without a volunteer until GRM procedures are posted.

  • Hot surfaces — nozzle reaches 300°C and beds reach 100°C. Do not touch during or immediately after printing.
  • Large moving gantry — never reach into the machine while it's running; the gantry spans the full bed and can pinch or strike.
  • Do not touch the nozzle or beds during auto-leveling.
  • Open frame — PLA/PETG only; never run ABS/ASA (unfiltered styrene fumes).
  • Allow parts to cool before removing plates from the magnetic bed.
  • Use scrapers and cutters away from your body.
  • Keep flammable materials clear of the machine.
  • High power draw — report any breaker trips, unusual smells, or heat issues to a volunteer immediately.
  • Report jams, failures, and maintenance issues right away.

Troubleshooting

Issue Likely Cause / Fix
Poor / uneven first layer Bed leveling on this machine is finicky — re-run auto-level and check manual plate balance; a volunteer can help dial in Z-offset. Glue stick often helps adhesion.
Seam / scar down the middle of a print Normal artifact of the four-plate cross-seam — reposition the model to avoid straddling the center where possible.
Under-extrusion / blobbing on long prints Tune flow and cooling; check for heat creep on extended jobs.
Touchscreen / interface behaves unexpectedly This unit runs the upgraded Open OrangeStorm OS — don't guess; flag a volunteer.
Breaker trips during a print High combined power load — stop and report to a volunteer; do not simply reset and continue.
